Festival International des Louisiane

Once a year, the last weekend of April to be exact, dawns the best four days in Louisiana. The city of Lafayette throws together a massive festival of music and food, bringing in musicians and artists from around the world to excite and thrill American audiences: Festival International des Lousiane. It is the largest free music and arts festival in the USA and takes up the entirety of downtown Lafayette with stages, food vendors, artists, and talented people selling their wares. It's like walking through a modern bazaar!

For me and my friends this is the best weekend of the year. It's a place of community and excitement and a ton of fun! There is so much to see and hear. All of the bars are open all day and there are booths selling drinks all day long, for day drinkers and the rest; and if you aren't a day drinker, you might become one for this particular weekend.

Because it's international most of the bands that come aren't known to any of us before we go. We just hop from stage to stage seeing what the festival has to offer. There are usually at least two bands that stick out to us every year and our favorite this year was a Czech Republic group called MYDY Rabycad. They showed up on stage with a vibe straight out of the 80's and energy enough to get their audience of hundreds bouncing out of their shoes.

It's been a wonderful tradition of Lafayette, LA for over thirty years, celebrating its own unique culture and many others from around the world. So if your looking for a reason to visit, let this be that excuse you're looking for!

The people are the best, too. But that's just Lafayette Louisiana for you (rated the "Happiest City in America" most recently). Every year that I participate in this festival I'm proud to call this city home and to call these people my people!
